RIPPED

Sun Jan 14, 2007, 11:01 PM
:star: Paranoia Sets In :star:

In a private note, :iconwazabees: very kindly let me know that one of my cat photos is being used on Flickr by someone other than me.  It's over here [link]

I went to look... and it's an 18 year old Spanish girl, whose entire gallery seems to consist of cat photos taken by other people.  She has left my signature on the frame and even my copyright watermark across the image.  I recognise quite a few other DA photos among them - please, any of you reading this, do go and check out whether your work it up there too!

I know it might be seen as 'flattery' if somebody collects their favourite cat photos from around the web and then displays them in their gallery - but it is not done with permission and unauthorised usage constitutes a breach of copyright, as far as I know.

I am more paranoid than before.  Up to now I have shared images in the spirit of community and in good faith; but we should all be aware of what's going on.  What concerns me is that this is just the tip of the iceberg; one isolated instance that I have been made aware of - what other rippage is going on, I don't even want to consider the possibilities.

I *do* know that currently there is a South African pug-dog site that ignored my requests to take down my pictures and are enhancing their web site with photos of mine very much without permission.

  • Mood: Rant
  • Listening to: the gentle hum of my computer
  • Reading: DA notes
  • Watching: my screen
  • Playing: with the idea of watermarking everything
  • Eating: the flavour of yesterday's garlic
  • Drinking: Tea... always tea!

Arrrgh. This particular situation is not a major big deal; but it just gives you a shake-up wake-up call about how trusting we all are putting out our work in public.

yea, i agree. it hasnt happened to me, but i see it happen a lot here to people on DA. all i could really say is that it really sucks, and people who take others photos and use them as their own rally dont have a heart, its a lot of work for a photographer to take a great photo and they care for it so much, and then someone in just a few seconds can take it and use it elsewhere as their own. =[ so stupid.

Yup - that's the problem with the internet, isn't it?! It's wide open to all sorts of mischief. We work on trust, but many don't respect that.
