Gotta Have TOYS

Tue Jan 23, 2007, 2:52 AM
:star: More Megapixels :star:

Yes, I browsed :iconel3sl:'s lovely gallery and found this super stamp and ... well, isn't that just a give-away what new toy I might be referring to :boing: :boing:

When the going gets tough, good ol' retail therapy certainly goes some way to cheering me up :hexentanz:

Except that said baby had a very nasty, very visible, very neon green cross-shaped hot pixel cluster and has now been sent back to Nikon for sensor re-mapping

(:?)  They do tell me that this is perfectly "within specs" and that EVERY sensor has at least one hot pixel.  Can you corroborate that?  Do each and every one of you with cameras have at least one hot / dead pixel ?????  Look closely now - are you sure you haven't missed spotting it?  It *must* be there, THEY told me so ;-)

I felt very short-changed when the D200 I bought at the beginning of 2006 made me less than ecstatic - journal entries at the time will explain further, if you really need to know :giggle: - and I ended up buying the D70s in part exchange when I returned the D200 I was dissatisfied with.  However great a workhorse the D70s most certainly is, I always had that niggling feeling that I wanted more megapixels.  I know, 6 m/p's is perfectly good enough, BUT... oh, you know how it goes :bounce:

On another note : my mother (in her 90's) has come through the hip operation okay and is still in hospital, seeing the physiotherapist once a day and for the rest being very lonely.  I spend as much time as I can visiting her, but it's never enough...

  • Mood: Obsessed
  • Listening to: washing machine
  • Eating: melon
  • Drinking: Tea... always tea!

Sounds like a crappy excuse on their part... I have a Canon and had to send it back when it was only 5 months old because the red eye flash had stopped working... I don't think brands have anything to do with the problems that we encounter with new cameras... sometimes you just get one that slipped through the cracks.
Great news about your Mom!

Did they fix it and is it now okay?

Yep... it took them over 3 weeks to do it... probably would have been longer except I called and complained after the first 10 days... then they put a rush on it. The good news is since it was still under warranty I didn't have to pay anything... still a pain in the butt!

Big pain, yes, but you were lucky about it happening within the warranty period.

you use the d80?

Well ... I *would* use the D80 if Nikon were to repair it and send it back :-) I bought it last Wednesday afternoon, had no chance to do test pix since my mum had just been taken to hospital... took a few photos on Thursday but had no time to look at them because that's the day my mum had her operation... took a few more on Friday - and on Saturday I finally processed them and checked them out and discovered that each and every image had the same neon green hot pixel at around 6 o'clock in the frame.

Monday morning first thing I was back at the camera shop complete with memory card and "proof" and now it's gone off to Nikon (in another city - so it's sent via courier and will take till after this w/end).

hope they get it back to you soon, and *fixed* . I'd love to hear about how you like it (and hopefully you do) after you get it back. =]

Well, my first gut reaction is

I had been allowed to take the shop's display model on a test run about a month ago and was very happy with the results 'out of the box' literally without looking at the manual and just running off and shooting randomly. The auto-focus is spot on and the colours crisp and sharp. I generally shoot in RAW so with post-processing they knocked my soxx off :-)

So I mulled over it - in the meanwhile writing you those notes and comments regarding your upcoming purchase - while trying to justify making the expensive jump. When my mum then had the fall Tuesday night and on Wednesday the x-rays confirmed that her hip was fractured, she needed an operation as well as a blood transfusion; I was in *serious* need of some spoiling and cheering up!!

Anyway, without actually having a working model here right now, I can still safely say that I think it's an absolutely great camera. I hope I won't eat my words in time to come, but that's my feeling so far. Impressed.
